The House of Representatives impeached President Trump on January 13, 2021, for incitement of insurrection, alleging that he provoked the incident at the Capitol by making false claims about the 2020 presidential election.
The Senate did not conduct a trial on the impeachment before the end of President Trump’s term.
One scholar has specifically suggested that impeaching or removing a president who has left office could raise bill of attainder issues.
