"Navy: Sailor was struck by propeller on carrier flight deck"

20 SEPTEMBER 2018

NORFOLK, Va. — The U.S. Navy says a sailor who died aboard an aircraft carrier was struck by the turning propeller of a plane.

The Navy said in a statement on Wednesday that Airman Apprentice Joseph Min Naglak had just secured an E-2C Hawkeye radar plane to the flight deck.

Naglak's death occurred Monday aboard the USS George H. W. Bush while it was in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Navy said the incident remains under investigation and that his death has been a heartbreaking experience for those on board the carrier.

The 21-year-old enlisted in the Navy in his home state of New Jersey in April 2017.

Four months later he had completed his training in Pensacola, Florida, and reported to the ship

The ship remains at sea, and flight operations have resumed.

"U.S. pulling some missile-defense systems out of Mideast"

By Gordon Lubold

Published: Sept 26, 2018 5:25 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON—The Pentagon is removing some U.S. missile systems from the Middle East in October, U.S. military officials said, a move that will leave American allies with fewer defenses as the White House ramps up its rhetoric against what it says are threats posed by Iran.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is pulling four Patriot missile systems out of Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain next month in a realignment of forces and capabilities as the military steps up its focus on threats from China and Russia, multiple senior military officials said.

The relocation of the systems out of the Middle East, which hasn’t been previously disclosed, is one of the most tangible signs of the Pentagon’s new focus on threats from Russia and China and away from the long-running conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

Two Patriot missile systems will be redeployed from Kuwait, and one each from Jordan and Bahrain, officials said.

Patriots are mobile missile systems capable of shooting down missiles and planes.

The four systems have been taken offline and will be redeployed by next month, officials said.

There are no plans for any of them to be replaced, and they are being returned to the U.S. for refurbishing and upgrades, an official said.

"New military jet crashes, pilot ejects in S Carolina"

29 SEPTEMBER 2018

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A military jet a short distance from its base crashed in South Carolina on Friday with the pilot ejecting safely and no one on the ground injured, authorities said.

The 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing F-35B crashed about 11:45 a.m. into an uninhabited marsh island near the Grays Hill community, authorities said.

The jet was based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort about 4 miles (6 kilometers) west of the crash site at Little Barnwell Island, the station said in a news release.

The Marine pilot ejected before the crash and was being checked for injuries, authorities said.

Video from the scene showed black smoke still rising from the island more than an hour after the crash.

Military officials and local police secured the island and asked people to stay away from the area.

The Marine F-35B fighter jet was on a routine training mission.

The Marine version of the jet is capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings.

One flew its first combat mission Thursday in Afghanistan.

The jet costs about $100 million.

The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps all have their own versions of the F-35.

The program has been criticized by some in Congress for testing problems, delays and cost overruns.

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is home to a squadron of F-35Bs and is the only place where pilots train to fly the jet, including some from the United Kingdom.

The crash site, Little Barnwell Island, is a historic site on the National Register.

The island has two mounds that archeologists think were used as a temple or in other ceremonies and were built around 1500.

"Pentagon’s F-35 fleet grounded to inspect engines following crash"

By Doug Cameron

Published: Oct 11, 2018 6:22 p.m. ET

The Pentagon on Thursday said much of the global fleet of Lockheed Martin Corp. F-35 combat jets was temporarily grounded to investigate engine problems following a Marine Corps plane crash last month.

Officials said the fleet of about 320 jets would undergo inspections over the next 48 hours to check fuel tubes in engines that are made by Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The suspect tubes may be installed on around half of the global fleet, limited to planes made before 2016, according to people familiar with the F-35’s production process.

Some aircraft have already been inspected and have resumed flying.

“If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced,” said the F-35 Joint Program Office, which oversees the purchase of the jets for the U.S. and overseas partners.

"Florida Air Force base suffers 'widespread catastrophic damage' from Michael"

CBSNews

12 OCTOBER 2018

Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida, suffered "widespread catastrophic damage" from Hurricane Michael, officials said Thursday.

The base is closed indefinitely while the damage is being assessed.

"At this point Tyndall residents and evacuated personnel should remain at their safe location," said Col. Brian Laidlaw, 325th Fighter Wing commander.

"We are actively developing plans to reunite families and plan to provide safe passage back to base housing."

Tyndall said roofs were ripped from buildings and there was significant structural damage.

Aerial video showed at least one display model of a fighter jet flipped over.

The video also shows damage to a hangar and some planes that appear to be damaged from falling debris.

Michael came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane in Mexico Beach, Florida, located about 15 miles from Tyndall.

"CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor reported Thursday that Michael appeared to do its worst damage in Panama City.

The roof of a school gymnasium was torn open.

An entire freight train was pushed clear off the rails.

Sabrina Marshall was inside her home as parts were torn away from her.

"And the door just, psssh, and the roof flew off," she said.

Downed trees and tangled power lines have made many streets impassable.

"I was in a bunker, almost a bunker," Karen Hasket said, "and just prayers."

At least six people are confirmed dead in at least three states from Michael.

"Mattis expected to sign order to send troops to Mexico border: reports"

By Robert Schroeder

Published: Oct 25, 2018 11:29 a.m. ET

Defense Secretary James Mattis is expected to sign an order to send at least 800 troops to the U.S. border with Mexico, reports said Thursday.

A U.S. official told Fox News the troops will be sent in response to a caravan of migrants and will offer "logistical support," providing tents and vehicles.

Thursday morning, President Donald Trump said on Twitter: "I am bringing out the military for this National Emergency."

"They will be stopped!"

THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER

"Trump sending 5,200 active duty troops to the border"

Anna Giaritelli

30 OCTOBER 2018

The Trump administration will deploy 5,200 soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the newly launched Operation Secure Line initiative to prepare for thousands of Central American migrants headed north, Pentagon and Homeland Security officials announced Monday afternoon.

Eight hundred of those troops have already been deployed from Fort Campbell and Fort Knox, according to U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command General Terrence John O'Shaughnessy.

The Department of Homeland Security last week deployed additional military personnel to the border as a caravan of people coming from Central America heads north.

The new wave of personnel will supplement the 2,100 National Guard troops already deployed to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Trump asked for the Guard's help in March when a 1,000-person caravan coming from Central America was reported.

The Defense Department will provide manpower to help with tasks such as engineering temporary barriers, barricades, and fencing; helping move border patrol personnel by air; working with medical teams to triage, treat and prepare patience for transportation on commercial services; command and control facilities; temporary housing for border patrol; and personal protective equipment for border patrol.

The Pentagon has asked its component, the United States Northern Command, to oversee the operation.

Other details about the new deployment remain unclear, but that's because the Pentagon has yet to decide who it will send to the border.

Trump told military officials in a meeting earlier this week he wanted active-duty troops in addition to the guard.

DOD would not comment on whether he will get personnel from both groups.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said the government is tracking two groups of migrants headed to the United States.

The first group is located in southern Mexico and is comprised of 3,500 people.

The second caravan is in Guatemala near the southern Mexico border and includes about 3,000 people.

U.S. troops deployed to border could exceed 5,200, general says"

By Nancy A. Youssef and Vivian Salama

Published: Oct 30, 2018 5:41 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON — The number of U.S. troops being deployed to the Mexican border could eventually grow beyond 5,239 — the figure that officials announced a day earlier — according to the military commander overseeing the deployment.

Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, said, “5,239 is not the top line.”

He is commander of U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for the territorial U.S., and met briefly with reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday.

O’Shaughnessy didn’t specify a final maximum troop figure, but a defense official said that another 3,000 troops are on “ready reserve” and could be sent later.

President Donald Trump has said he has sent U.S. troops to the border to help stop a caravan of migrants from Central America from entering America.

REUTERS

"Pentagon could send about 7,000 U.S. troops to Mexico border: official"

31 OCTOBER 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has identified about 7,000 troops that could be deployed to the border with Mexico if needed, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the number was an initial estimate and could change.

"The total number of troops deployed will change each day as military forces flow into the operating area, but initial estimates indicate the Department of Defense has identified approximately 7,000 troops to support, if required, Operation Faithful Patriot," the official said.

The official said about 2,000 of the 7,000 would be on standby in case they were required.

On Tuesday, the top U.S. general overseeing a deployment of more than 5,200 troops to the border with Mexico said troop levels would rise further, but declined to say how high or estimate what the operation will cost.

Many basic questions remained unanswered days after the Pentagon announced the open-ended deployment of over 5,200 active-duty troops to the border, including the scope of the mission as well as the Pentagon's assessment of any threat posed by arriving migrants.

President Donald Trump has hardened his stance on immigration ahead of the Nov. 6 congressional elections.

He has drawn attention to a caravan of migrants trekking through Mexico toward the United States as he seeks to fire up support for Republican candidates ahead of hotly contested midterm elections for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

Republican lawmakers and other Trump supporters have applauded the deployment.

But critics say Trump is politicizing the military, deploying them as a stunt to drive Republican voters to the polls without any real national security threat.

"Utah mayor killed in Afghanistan while on National Guard deployment"

John Bowden

3 NOVEMBER 2018

The mayor of North Ogden, Utah was killed Saturday on duty in Afghanistan as part of Utah's National Guard.

Brent Taylor was killed Saturday in an "insider attack" in Kabul, according to a statement from the Utah National Guard to Fox 13 Salt Lake City, while the terrorist responsible was immediately killed by Afghan forces.

"These reports also indicate the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan Forces," the statement said.

"The incident is under investigation."

The attacker was reportedly posing as a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, which U.S. officials have hoped can take over battling terror groups in the region in the coming years.

Taylor had temporarily stepped down as North Ogden's mayor during his deployment, which began in January of this year.

The Fox affiliate reported that Taylor had been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan multiple times in the past.

"Things are going great, and I absolutely love the dedicated US and Afghan soldiers I serve with every day," Taylor wrote in an update about his deployment earlier this year.

Taylor was killed just two weeks after another U.S. service member, Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Smiley, was wounded in an "apparent insider attack" in Afghanistan.

Two Afghan officials were also killed in that attack, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, according to CNN.
