"Vice President Kamala Harris under fire for 'disrespectful' tweet"

Caitlin McFall

30 MAY 2021

Vice President Kamala Harris came under fire Saturday for tweeting about Memorial Day, but without mentioning the significance of the weekend.

"Enjoy the long weekend," Harris wrote, above a candid photo of herself smiling.

Social media users condemned Harris’ lack of tact reminding the vice president of the sacrifices the "long weekend" is meant to honor.

"Don't forget why we have a long weekend," Tony Lederer wrote in a tweet paired with a picture of the Vietnam Memorial.

"It is Memorial Day weekend - [not] for enjoying - but for memorializing our fallen," wrote another.

"Our brothers and sisters, who 'gave the last full measure of devotion."

"Please try to respect that."

The tweet was shared with an image of a woman lying on a blanket in front of a tombstone at the Arlington National Cemetery with an infant.

"While we get the long weekend to ‘enjoy,’ let us all please take a solemn moment to remember those courageous men and women who sacrificed *everything," Peter Francis wrote.

Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday of May each year to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.

The tradition began as Decoration Day during the spring in the years following the end of the Civil War, eventually becoming a federal holiday in 1971.

Other social media users reminded the vice president that not all Americans are allotted a long weekend with Mondays off, particularly as the service industry has reopened following the coronavirus pandemic.

A 2019 study by Bloomberg BNA found that 97 percent of employees designated Memorial Day a paid day off, but roughly 40 percent of companies require some employees to still work.

Fox News could not reach the White House for comment regarding the vice president’s tweet.

Paul Plante says:

And getting back to this thread after a brief hiatus to allow Queen Empress Kamala to gain her office, which has now happened, let’s go to a Fox News article entitled “Vice President Kamala Harris under fire for ‘disrespectful’ tweet” by Caitlin McFall on 30 May 2021, where we have the latest on the Queen Empress, as follows:

Vice President Kamala Harris came under fire Saturday for tweeting about Memorial Day, but without mentioning the significance of the weekend.

“Enjoy the long weekend,” Harris wrote, above a candid photo of herself smiling.

end quotes

The significance of Memorial Day weekend to the Queen Empress is that it is the first long holiday of the summer season, which means get out there and party hardy because it is good for the American economy, which needs all the help it can get, plus it is good for the GDP, which in turn makes the Harris-Biden presidency look good, and when the Harris-Biden presidency looks good, that makes the Democrat party that put them there look good, which means all is well with the world and we can all drink beer and get hammered this weekend knowing that Queen Empress Kamala has our backs and is keeping us safe, which takes us back to Fox as follows:

Social media users condemned Harris’ lack of tact reminding the vice president of the sacrifices the “long weekend” is meant to honor.

end quotes

And my goodness, people, that is so unfair, is it not?

Queen Empress Kamala doesn’t know anything about those sacrifices, nor does she really care, because they happened to “other people,” so shouldn’t she be cut some slack?

Getting back to Fox, the attacks on poor Queen Empress Kamala for not knowing anything about Memorial Day other than it is a long weekend continue as follows:

“Don’t forget why we have a long weekend,” Tony Lederer wrote in a tweet paired with a picture of the Vietnam Memorial.

“It is Memorial Day weekend – [not] for enjoying – but for memorializing our fallen,” wrote another.

“Our brothers and sisters, who ‘gave the last full measure of devotion.”

“Please try to respect that.”

The tweet was shared with an image of a woman lying on a blanket in front of a tombstone at the Arlington National Cemetery with an infant.

“While we get the long weekend to ‘enjoy,’ let us all please take a solemn moment to remember those courageous men and women who sacrificed everything,” Peter Francis wrote.

Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday of May each year to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.

The tradition began as Decoration Day during the spring in the years following the end of the Civil War, eventually becoming a federal holiday in 1971.

Fox News could not reach the White House for comment regarding the vice president’s tweet.

end quotes

Because it is a long weekend, so of course they aren’t there to comment!

And why would anyone expect Queen Empress Kamala Harris to know anything about Memorial Day, anyway?

Has anyone ever heard her thank a veteran for anything, starting with her freedom to be vice president?

I haven’t, anyway.

BUSINESS INSIDER

"Nikki Haley called VP Kamala Harris 'unprofessional and unfit' for telling people to 'enjoy the long weekend'"

kvlamis@insider.com (Kelsey Vlamis)

31 MAY 2021

*Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, criticized Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday.

* Harris' tweet saying "enjoy the long weekend" prompted Haley to call her "unprofessional and unfit."

*Harris had tweeted on Sunday morning, before Haley's criticism, about the meaning of Memorial Day.

Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, had a go at Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday over Harris' well-wishes for the holiday weekend.

Harris shared a tweet on Saturday with a photo of herself and the message "enjoy the long weekend."

Haley, who served as President Donald Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, retweeted it on Sunday afternoon and wrote, "Unprofessional and unfit."

It wasn't clear exactly what Haley didn't like about the tweet.

But some Twitter users expressed disapproval that Harris had tweeted about the long weekend instead of what Memorial Day is about.

Memorial Day takes place on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn United States military personnel who died in the line of duty.

Harris tweeted on Sunday morning, hours before Haley's criticism, about the meaning of the national holiday.

"Throughout our history our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country," Harris said.

"As we prepare to honor them on Memorial Day, we remember their service and their sacrifice."

For her part, Haley had not tweeted about Memorial Day as of Sunday night.

Haley, a Republican, is widely thought to be a likely 2024 presidential candidate.

She has said that if Trump were to run she would support him, despite criticizing him after the Capitol riot.

"He went down a path he shouldn't have, and we shouldn't have followed him, and we shouldn't have listened to him," she told Politico in February.

"And we can't let that ever happen again."

THE CAPE CHARLES MIRROR JUNE 1, 2021 AT 9:14 PM

Paul Plante says:

And going back to a Daily Mail article entitled “Kamala Harris is branded ‘ignorant’ for praising BLM protests and calling them ‘essential’ just three days after two cops were shot during Louisville riots” by James Gordon for Dailymail.com updated 26 September 2020, we had Queen Empress Kamala telling us as follows about BLACK LIVES MATTER:

‘I actually believe that Black Lives Matter has been the most significant agent for change within the criminal justice system,’ she said.

end quotes

Which brings us to a Fox News article entitled “Black mothers of police shooting victims accuse BLM of profiting from their ‘loved ones’” by Caitlin McFall on 30 May 2021, where we have the other side of that story, which makes Queen Empress Kamala look like an ignorant pandering fool, to wit:

Some mothers of Black sons and daughters killed by police officers are criticizing the Black Lives Matter national organization amid controversy over co-founder Patrisse Cullors’ lavish lifestyle.

end quotes

By way of review, Patrisse was the star of a New York Post story entitled “Marxist BLM leader buys $1.4 million home in ritzy LA enclave” by Isabel Vincent on April 10, 2021, where we learned as follows:

Patrisse Khan-Cullors, the leader of Black Lives Matter and a self-described Marxist, recently purchased a $1.4 million home in an exclusive Los Angeles neighborhood where the vast majority of residents are white, according to reports.

The home, which features three bedrooms and three bathrooms, is nestled in Topanga Canyon and has a separate guesthouse on the property, according to a celebrity real estate blog which reported the transaction last week.

The property, which is about a 15 minute drive from Malibu beaches, features bamboo floors and vaulted ceilings, according to the listing.

Once a hippie enclave in the 1960s, Topanga Canyon is now home to sprawling homes where 88 percent of the residents are white.

After the sale of the property was made public, critics took to social media to blast Khan-Cullors.

Black Lives Matter, which began as hashtag in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin, took in more than $90 million last year and was at the forefront of protests across the country last year after the death of George Floyd in May.

Khan-Cullors, 37, signed a multi-platform deal with Warner Bros in October, although it is not clear how much she is paid by BLM since their finances flow through a complex web of for-profit and nonprofit corporate entities.

end quotes

And then there was the New York Post story entitled “Inside BLM co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors’ million-dollar real-estate buying binge” by Isabel Vincent on April 10, 2021, to wit:

As protests broke out across the country in the name of Black Lives Matter, the group’s co-founder went on a real estate-buying binge, snagging four high-end homes for $3.2 million in the US alone, according to property records.

Patrisse Khan-Cullors, 37, also eyed property in the Bahamas at an ultra-exclusive resort where Justin Timberlake and Tiger Woods both have homes, The Post has learned.

Luxury apartments and townhouses at the beachfront Albany resort outside Nassau are priced between $5 million and $20 million, according to a local agent.

The self-described Marxist last month purchased a $1.4 million home on a secluded road a short drive from Malibu in Los Angeles, according to a report.

The 2,370 square-foot property features “soaring ceilings, skylights and plenty of windows” with canyon views.

The Topanga Canyon homestead, which includes two houses on a quarter acre, is just one of three homes Khan-Cullors owns in the Los Angeles area, public records show.

Some fellow activists were taken aback by the real estate revelations.

Hawk Newsome, the head of Black Lives Matter Greater New York City, called for “an independent investigation” to find out how the global network spends its money.

“If you go around calling yourself a socialist, you have to ask how much of her own personal money is going to charitable causes,” he said.

“It’s really sad because it makes people doubt the validity of the movement and overlook the fact that it’s the people that carry this movement.”

Last year, Khan-Cullors and spouse Janaya Khan ventured to Georgia to acquire a fourth home — a “custom ranch” on 3.2 rural acres in Conyers featuring a private airplane hangar with a studio apartment above it, and the use of a 2,500-foot “paved/grass” community runway that can accommodate small airplanes.

The three-bedroom, two-bath house, about 30 minutes from Atlanta, has an indoor swimming pool and a separate “RV shop” that can accommodate the repair of a mobile home or small aircraft, according to the real estate listing.

The Peach State retreat was purchased in January 2020 for $415,000, two years after the publication of Khan-Cullors’ best-selling memoir, “When They Call You a Terrorist.”

In October, the activist signed “a multi-platform” deal with Warner Bros. Television Group to help produce content for “black voices who have been historically marginalized,” she said in a statement.

end quotes

Being a Marxist terrorist in America pays quite well, it seems!

And can we forget the thread in the venerable Cape Charles Mirror entitled “Black Lives Matter Founder Moves to Whitest Place in America” on April 11, 2021 http://www.capecharlesmirror.com/news/b ... n-america/ where we learned that Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors had chosen to live in one of the whitest areas of California after purchasing a $1.4 million dollar home in an area that has a black population of just 1.6 per cent.

Which takes us back to the Fox News article as follows:

“It’s all a facade,” Samaria Rice, the mother of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was killed by a White police officer in Cleveland in 2014, told the New York Post on Saturday.

Rice said she requested Cullors’ help in re-launching a federal investigation into her son’s death.

But short of exchanging a few emails, her pleas never garnered face time with the Black Lives Matter executive director.

“They are benefiting off the blood of our loved ones, and they won’t even talk to us,” Rice said.

Cullors announced her departure after a five-year reign earlier this week following reports she had purchased four homes for $3.2 million.

Hawk Newsome, the head of Black Lives Matter Greater New York City — a separate group — called for an “independent investigation” into the national organization’s finances.

Cullors said her decision to step down was not tied to the controversy, but to instead focus on her second book and a television deal with Warner Bros.

But some frustrated Black mothers have accused the organization of profiting off their “dead loved ones.”

In a March statement, Rice joined Lisa Simpson — the mother of 18-year old Richard Risher, who was fatally shot in 2016 in Los Angeles – in condemning the Black Lives Matter movement for “monopolizing and capitalizing our fight for justice.”

“We never hired them to be the representatives in the fight for justice for our loved ones murdered by police,” the mothers wrote.

The mother of Breonna Taylor, a Kentucky Black woman shot and killed by police during a raid on her home, said the group’s national standing has yet to help her following her daughter’s death.

“I have never personally dealt with BLM Louisville and personally have found them to be fraud,” Tamika Palmer wrote in an April Facebook post, The Post reported.

Fox News could not immediately reach the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for comment.

end quotes

Which takes us back to September 26, 2020 and Queen Empress Kamala telling us “I actually believe that Black Lives Matter has been the most significant agent for change within the criminal justice system.”

Yeah, right, Queen Empress Kamala, just as Michael Brown was murdered by the police!

What a moron!

And she is going to be our next president!

Bad times ahead for the nation if that sad day should ever arrive.

THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER

"Kamala Harris is in over her head and embarrassing herself"

Eddie Scarry

2 JUNE 2021

Next to tending a parking lot, the vice presidency can be the easiest job in the world, yet, somehow, Kamala Harris is making it look like a monumental undertaking.

Four months into the role, it couldn’t be more clear that Harris is so far in over her head that she’ll need dynamite to blast her way out.

(She might hope it will be powered by a rolled-up solar panel.)

Admittedly, Harris hasn’t been done any favors by her boss.

President Joe Biden keeps saddling her with work she either doesn’t want or doesn’t know how to do.

He said on Tuesday he was making Harris the lead person in his administration on efforts to dismantle all the ways that states organize their elections.

(This is often referred to by Democrats and the media as “expanding voter rights.”)

The New York Times expressed its deep confidence in the decision, stating in a news article that Biden had “added another politically thorny problem to the vice president’s policy portfolio.”

Translation: Does Biden know what he’s doing?

Biden’s other big gift to Harris in recent weeks was a splashy announcement that she would be the one to oversee the obscene crush of destitute migrants dumping themselves into the care of U.S. taxpayers at the southern border.

The numbers have climbed to new, astronomical heights under Biden, and there’s no sign that they’re dropping or even plateauing.

In response, Harris and her team so far have done nothing but try to work the media into believing the vice president isn’t really expected to do anything, so you can’t blame her for failing.

In the same New York Times report about Harris taking on “voter rights,” the paper noted that “the vice president … and her staff have worked to reframe expectations around her role, stressing that she will examine the root causes of migration, not single-handedly stop the flow of migrants to the United States.”

Ah, yes, "reframe."

So Harris will “examine” the border crisis, not actually produce any tangible, weighable result.

Apparently, however, the belief that Harris might actually have been given a responsibility wasn’t inherent in Biden explicitly stating he was appointing her to help in “stemming the migration to our southern border,” as he said at the White House on March 24.

But it was a political trick pulled off by — ah, ha! — Republicans!

CNN reporter Natasha Bertrand said Monday that there had been “confusion” over what Harris was actually supposed to do at the border and that Republicans “kind of seized on that confusion” and “made it seem” that Harris was expected to do something real.

Darn those clever Republicans.

Sorry, Bertrand, but I’m not so naive.

The truth is that Harris doesn’t know what she’s doing.

Even at the simplest part of her job, public appearances, she is falling embarrassingly flat.

She says ridiculous things in interviews with friendly journalists, as when she said in February that she was taken aback at the lack of a vaccine “stockpile” when she came into office.

(Why would there be a stockpile of vaccines that had been rush-produced and were immediately distributed in order to stop a pandemic?)

She laughs when it’s inappropriate, such as that time when a reporter asked if she had any plans to visit the southern border, and her answer, “not today,” was followed by a forced and self-conscious cackle.

Addressing a graduating class at the Naval Academy last week, she crammed in a gender-inclusive line about male soldiers wanting to carry lighter equipment the same way women do.

She pushed out an uncomfortable giggle for that one, too.

Harris has fast become our cringiest vice president.

Maybe Biden should help her out and take back some of those fake responsibilities.

THE CAPE CHARLES MIRROR JUNE 2, 2021 AT 9:31 PM

Paul Plante says:

Poor Queen Empress Kamala Harris, herself a victim of the rampant systemic racism in this country that relegates Black people like herself to menial jobs like picking cotton and scraping bubble gum off of the floors of Greyhound bus stations with a single-edge razer blade, simply cannot seem to catch a break, at all, and here I am referring to a Washington Examiner story entitled “Kamala Harris is in over her head and embarrassing herself” by Eddie Scarry on 2 June 2021, to wit:

Next to tending a parking lot, the vice presidency can be the easiest job in the world, yet, somehow, Kamala Harris is making it look like a monumental undertaking.

end quotes

And my goodness, people, of course it is – for her, anyway.

And that thought takes us back to an ABC News story entitled “Obama Calls Californian Kamala Harris ‘Best Looking’ Attorney General” by Arlette Saenz on April 4, 2013, where we see that Obama, himself Black, looked at the Queen Empress as nothing more than a sex object and just another pretty face, to wit:

President Obama assessed the beauty of California’s attorney general Kamala Harris, calling her “the best looking attorney general,” during remarks at a fundraiser in Atherton, California.

“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake.”

“She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country – Kamala Harris is here.”

“It’s true!”

“C’mon,” he said as the crowd laughed, according to a report provided by a print reporter at the home of John Goldman, an heir to the Levi-Strauss fortune.

“And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years.”

“She’s brilliant and she’s dedicated,” Obama said at a luncheon fundraiser benefiting the DNC.

Harris has served as California’s attorney general since 2011 and is a rising star for Democrats. S

She is often mentioned as a potential candidate for governor.

The president came under some fire back in 2008 when he referred to a female reporter as ” sweetie ” and told her to hold a question for a press availability.

end quotes

So, did Joe Biden pick her for her looks then, based on Hussein Obama’s recommendation about her looks, because it seems she is seriously lacking in brains and common sense, which takes us back to the Washington Examiner article, to wit:

Four months into the role, it couldn’t be more clear that Harris is so far in over her head that she’ll need dynamite to blast her way out.

end quotes

But here we have to be compassionate and realize that by being Black, which makes her a victim of the systemic racism which is rampant in America and keeps every Black person down, there simply was no possible way for the Queen Empress to get the right kind of experience that would enable her to be able to be an American vice president, because with systemic racism so rampant, it is not expected that a Black person ever could be vice president, so they get no formal training while growing up as how to actually be one, which takes us back to that article as follows:

Admittedly, Harris hasn’t been done any favors by her boss.

President Joe Biden keeps saddling her with work she either doesn’t want or doesn’t know how to do.

end quotes

And that is because Joe Biden himself has no real clue as to what a vice president is supposed to do, because Joe is none too bright himself, which takes us back to the Washington Examiner for more about the failing Queen Empress, who thinks Michael Brown was murdered by the police and BLACK LIVES MATTER are just the greatest, to wit:

He (“Corn Pop” Biden) said on Tuesday he was making Harris the lead person in his administration on efforts to dismantle all the ways that states organize their elections.

(This is often referred to by Democrats and the media as “expanding voter rights.”)

The New York Times expressed its deep confidence in the decision, stating in a news article that Biden had “added another politically thorny problem to the vice president’s policy portfolio.”

Translation: Does Biden know what he’s doing?

end quotes

And that answer is no, Joe don’t have a clue, and never ever actually did, which takes us back to the Washington Examiner, as follows:

Biden’s other big gift to Harris in recent weeks was a splashy announcement that she would be the one to oversee the obscene crush of destitute migrants dumping themselves into the care of U.S. taxpayers at the southern border.

The numbers have climbed to new, astronomical heights under Biden, and there’s no sign that they’re dropping or even plateauing.

In response, Harris and her team so far have done nothing but try to work the media into believing the vice president isn’t really expected to do anything, so you can’t blame her for failing.

end quotes

And because she is Black, we would be unfeeling racists if we actually did blame her for failing, well, because that is what systemic racism forces Black people like the Queen Empress to do, which is to fail, because white people want to keep them from getting ahead, which again takes us back to the story, to wit:

In the same New York Times report about Harris taking on “voter rights,” the paper noted that “the vice president … and her staff have worked to reframe expectations around her role, stressing that she will examine the root causes of migration, not single-handedly stop the flow of migrants to the United States.”

Ah, yes, “reframe.”

So Harris will “examine” the border crisis, not actually produce any tangible, weighable result.

end quotes

But, people, be fair here – the poor dear can’t actually produce any tangible, weighable result, because systemic racism never prepared her to be able to do so, and that is really Joe Biden’s fault because of busing which forced her to have to go to a substandard school for Black people instead of a superior school reserved only for white people, which again takes us back to the story of the life of Queen Empress Kamala, as follows:

Apparently, however, the belief that Harris might actually have been given a responsibility wasn’t inherent in Biden explicitly stating he was appointing her to help in “stemming the migration to our southern border,” as he said at the White House on March 24.

But it was a political trick pulled off by — ah, ha! — Republicans!

THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER

"The Kamala Harris cringe continues"

Eddie Scarry

3 JUNE 2021

Vice President Kamala Harris had one job: Be the woman of color Joe Biden needed at his side to win the presidency.

That job was completed in November, and now, it's clear that Harris doesn't know what to do with herself.

A New York Times story on Thursday attempted to make something out of Biden's recent announcement that he was appointing Harris to lead his administration's efforts to dismantle all the ways that states organize their elections.

(This is often referred to by Democrats and the media as “expanding voter rights.”)

"Wow."

"Sounds like a serious undertaking," you might say.

"How's she going to pull that off?!"

The article answered it this way: "Her advisers say she will take a wide-ranging approach to the issue by giving speeches, convening stakeholders and using the vice-presidential bully pulpit to raise awareness of the importance of the vote."

Translation: Harris will do some talks and media interviews with friendly journalists about why "voter rights" are important to the Biden administration.

That's it.

That's the "wide-ranging approach."

Admittedly, it fits in with the rest of Harris's tenure as vice president so far.

She was also tasked supposedly with controlling the catastrophic mess at the southern border.

But since she was given that gift from Biden more than a month ago, her team has been busy working over the media to, as the New York Times previously put it, "reframe expectations around her role, stressing that she will examine the root causes of migration, not single-handedly stop the flow of migrants to the United States.”

It's like that scene from HBO's Veep when fictional Vice President Selina Meyer mistakenly makes a promise that backs her into a political corner that she can't escape.

Realizing what she's done, she ridiculously instructs her staff, "I need you to make me not have said that."

Harris is aimless, and it shows with every pathetic attempt she makes at looking productive.

She's the real-life Selina Meyer.

THE CAPE CHARLES MIRROR JUNE 5, 2021 AT 10:12 PM

Paul Plante says:

And while we ponder what could possibly be going on in the mind of “Corn Pop” Biden with respect to him detailing Queen Empress Kamala to solve the problems with Guatemala that are driving people from that country to our southern border, where the Biden administration is welcoming them in as new members of the Democrat party, for some essential background, because with respect to Guatemala, people, yes, we have been here before, many times, actually, the U.S. having a long history of relations with Guatemala, as “Corn Pop” himself should know, if any part of his mind remains intact, which is doubtful, let’s go back to 2016 when Hussein Obama was in the white house, and “Corn Pop” was his vice president, as follows:

The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release

January 14, 2016

FACT SHEET: The United States and Central America: Honoring Our Commitments

On the occasion of the Vice President’s attendance at the inauguration of President Jimmy Morales in Guatemala City, the Obama administration reaffirms its commitment to a multiyear effort to assist the governments of Central America to build a safer and more prosperous future for their citizens, including through supporting governments to become more transparent, accountable, and capable of providing basic services and upholding the rule of law.

end quotes

And as we can see today, that was another failure of the Hussein Obama administration.

As to Jimmy Morales, a former cabinet minister accused Jimmy Morales of having sexually abused young female public workers with complicity of other government officials, and on January 14, 2020, Guatemalan civil society groups began pressuring Guatemalan authorities to arrest President Jimmy Morales for corruption after he left office, and eight of his allies, including some who were not in his administration, were charged with corruption, including two former FCN legislators and 2019 FCN presidential candidate Estuardo Galdámez.

end quotes

Quite the dude, alright.

Getting back to Obama:

For Fiscal Year 2016, the Administration plans to provide up to $750 million to implement its Strategy in support of the Northern Triangle’s Alliance for Prosperity Plan, and other regional priorities.

This figure more than doubles U.S. assistance to Central America of $305 million in Fiscal Year 2014 and represents a thirty-four percent increase over the $560 million allocated to the region in Fiscal Year 2015.

Under the $750 million approved by the U.S. Congress, the Administration is able to provide the region up to $299 million in Development Assistance, $222 million in International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement funding towards the Central America Regional Security Initiative (CARSI), $184 million in Economic Support Funds for CARSI and regional prosperity, economic opportunity, and governance programs, $26 million in Foreign Military Financing, and $4 million in International Military Education and Training, in addition to funds for global health, demining, and other programs, including the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.

The new assistance from the United States to Central America will also place significant responsibility on the Northern Triangle governments to undertake needed reforms to receive U.S. funds in support of the Alliance for Prosperity Plan.

To this end, the United States Congress required that 25 percent of assistance to the national governments of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras be withheld until the U.S. Secretary of State certifies and reports to Congress that each government is taking effective steps to:

* Inform its citizens of the dangers of the journey to the southwest border of the United States.

* Combat human smuggling and trafficking

* Improve border security, and

* Facilitate the safe return, repatriation, and reintegration of undocumented migrants

The Obama administration also notes that an additional 50 percent of U.S. assistance to the national governments of the Northern Triangle countries may only be obligated after the U.S. Secretary of State certifies that each government is taking effective steps to meet criteria such as:

* Combat corruption and strengthen public institutions

* Improve civilian jurisdiction and counter activities of criminal organizations

* Protect human rights

* Support programs to promote equitable growth

* Implement effective civil society consultations, and

* Increase government revenues.

The Obama Administration recognizes that the enabling environment for sustained growth, stability and prosperity for the region will require good governance, including support for democratic values, strengthening criminal justice systems and other legal institutions to combat impunity and promote the rule of law, and advancing rights and protections for civil society and journalists, as well as for vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Only through measurable progress towards those objectives will the private sector, small business owners, and international investors have the necessary confidence in the security of their investment and assurances that business dealings are fair and legal.

The United States is also partnering with Central American and Caribbean countries to identify concrete steps to advance energy sector reform, regional integration, and clean energy development.

Bolstering Cooperation to Protect Vulnerable Migrants Consistent with U.S. Law

The Obama Administration is deepening cooperation between the United States and Central America to ensure that fewer migrants embark on the dangerous journey to the United States.

Those who do not qualify for refugee status will be returned consistent with U.S. law and values.

The numbers of unaccompanied children and family units apprehended at the United States’ southwest border have continued to increase through the fall and winter, a time when the numbers have historically decreased.

Unaccompanied children and family unit apprehensions in November and December were significantly above the previous highest apprehension totals for these months, which occurred in 2014.

As the President and Vice President have made clear, recently arrived undocumented migrants who have been through the immigration court process, have been determined by a U.S. immigration judge to not qualify for asylum or other relief, and have received final orders of removal, are immigration enforcement priorities and should be removed.

As part of the civil immigration enforcement priorities announced by Secretary Johnson in November 2014, the Department of Homeland Security is focused on removing individuals who, whether alone or with family members, have been apprehended while attempting to unlawfully enter the United States and individuals who have received a final order of removal on or after January 1, 2014.

While securing our Southwest border and enforcing our immigration laws are top priorities for the U.S. government, the Administration understands that these actions alone will not address the underlying conditions that currently exist in Central America. Current push factors driving the recent migration spike include criminal violence, domestic and sexual violence, a debilitating drought, and a lack of economic opportunity.

The U.S. Strategy for Engagement in Central America is intended to address many of underlying conditions driving migration.

The Administration is working diligently to establish additional avenues for safe, legal, and orderly migration.

Broadening access to protection for refugees from the Northern Triangle must be a shared responsibility of the United States, Central American governments, and the other countries of the hemisphere and around the world.

The United States plans to expand access to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for vulnerable individuals and families from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

This will:

* Expanding access to resettlement for asylum seekers from the Northern Triangle.

* Offer a legal alternative to the dangerous and unlawful journey many are currently taking in the hands of human smugglers.

* Enable the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees and its nongovernmental partners in the region to identify persons in need of refugee protection

* Better address the needs of those threatened by criminal gang violence and domestic violence, human rights defenders who have been targeted, and others.

A Comprehensive Approach

The Obama Administration is dedicated to pursuing a comprehensive approach in Central America.

This includes partnering with the region to advance good governance, prosperity, and citizen security, enforcing our domestic immigration laws, and working to provide services and assistance to migrants or intending migrants who may be at imminent risk of harm.

The Obama administration believes that a safe, stable, and prosperous Central America is vital in order to achieve a future where the Western Hemisphere is middle class, democratic, and secure.

"AOC slammed Kamala Harris for telling Guatemalan migrants 'do not come,' saying the US helped destabilize the country in the first place"

wbostock@businessinsider.com (Bill Bostock)

8 JUNE 2021

* Kamala Harris told Guatemalans on Monday that they should not try to cross the US border.

* "You will be turned back," Harris told a news conference in Guatemala City, in her first overseas trip.

* Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said this was "disappointing to see."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has criticized Vice President Kamala Harris' rejection of Guatemalan migrants, saying the US was in part responsible for destabilizing the country in the first place.

At a press conference in Guatemala City on Monday, Harris told Guatemalans thinking of trying to enter the US to stay home, saying: "Do not come."

Later Monday, Ocasio-Cortez said of Harris' speech: "This is disappointing to see."

"First, seeking asylum at any US border is a 100% legal method of arrival," she said.

"Second, the US spent decades contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America."

"We can't help set someone's house on fire and then blame them for fleeing."

The US recorded more than 178,000 migrants - many of which were Guatemalan - trying to enter the US-Mexico border in April, the US Customs and Border Patrol said.

It was the highest one-month total in 20 years, CNN reported.

On March 24, Biden said that he was putting Harris in charge of all affairs concerning the southern US border.

At her Monday speech, Harris said: "I want to emphasize that the goal of our work is to help Guatemalans find hope at home."

"At the same time, I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come."

"Do not come."

"We, as one of our priorities, will discourage illegal migration."

"And I believe if you come to our border, you will be turned back," she added.

Guatemala was Harris' first foreign trip as vice president.

"Harris says Mexico talks 'candid,' pledges investment to stem migration"

By Nandita Bose

JUNE 8, 2021

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that relations were entering a “new era” as they agreed on Tuesday to deepen economic ties and invest in Central America to try to lower a record spike in migration.

Harris said talks with Lopez Obrador billed as focused on root causes of migration were “candid,” covering topics ranging from migration to security, vaccines, the pandemic and the drug fentanyl.

Much of the focus was on improving livelihoods in the region, and the United States pledged $130 million to support worker rights in Mexico, a Harris aide said.

“I strongly believe that we are embarking on a new era that makes clear the interdependence and interconnection between nations,” Harris said.

Lopez Obrador said the meeting was pleasant and beneficial for both nations.

The administration of President Joe Biden has been struggling with the number of migrant children and families arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, mainly from Central America, and Biden has tasked Harris with trying to solve the issue.

Since Biden took office in January, the number of migrants taken into custody per month at the border has risen to the highest levels in 20 years.

Lopez Obrador, who built a working relationship with Donald Trump despite the former U.S. president’s economic threats and insults against Mexico over migration, said his government was very interested in maintaining good relations with Washington.

It was not immediately clear if Harris used the meeting to push Mexico to further intensify efforts to detain migrants, many of whom escape poverty, crime and corruption in Central America to travel through Mexico to the U.S. border.

Harris said the talks were “very productive,” including a significant amount of time one-on-one with Lopez Obrador, a veteran leftist.

A White House official said Harris spent more than an hour in private meetings with Lopez Obrador.

The economy, security cooperation and development in southern Mexico and Central America were addressed, Ebrard said.

Harris spokeswoman and senior adviser Symone Sanders had said on Monday the two sides would discuss stepping up enforcement.

However, Ebrard said they would not.

“We are not going to talk about operations or other things,” Ebrard said earlier on Tuesday.

MEXICO ROLE

The administration sees Mexico as an important partner both on slowing the flow and on working on development in Central America, where relations between national governments and Washington are increasingly fraught.

Washington and Mexico largely agree they need to attack underlying causes of poverty and violence to stem migration from Central America’s “Northern Triangle” - El Salvador Guatemala and Honduras.

Mexico detained 91,000 illegal migrants in the five months of the year, immigration authorities said on Monday, with minors making up a fifth of all detentions.

Some members of the Biden administration think Mexico could do more.

Harris is on her first trip abroad since taking office.

She has promised an additional $310 million in aid to soothe the impact of the pandemic and hurricanes last year in Central America.

Mexico has implemented domestic cash-for-tree-planting and youth unemployment benefit programs to El Salvador and Honduras on a limited scale and plans to add Guatemala, Ebrard said on Tuesday before the Harris meeting.

On Monday, Harris met with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei and said the two leaders had “robust” talks on fighting corruption to deter migration from Central America.

At that meeting, Harris told potential migrants “Do not come,” to the United States, a blunt statement that immigration advocates said went against the spirit of the administration’s commitment to a more humane approach to managing migration.
