I don't think the water quality in Taiwan is any better. Massive purification must be in place.

That is the point I was aiming towards, about the need for massive filtration ...

And Ohio isn't the only place these WATER HOG CHIP FABS are going ...

They are going into Arizona, as well, one of the driest states in the nation ...

Phoenix water officials are planning for water use around 10,000 acre-feet a year at TSMC's 5-nanometer fab and up to 40,000 acre-feet a year if, at some point down the road, there were six fabs on site ...

According to a Taiwan News article titled "TSMC could face future water shortages in Arizona - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Intel both planning to build new fabs in state as drought worsens" by Eric Chang, Taiwan News, Staff Writer on 08/19/2021, we learned as follows about that situation, to wit:

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers get set to significantly increase their presence in Arizona, one of the worst droughts in decades in the American Southwest could affect future operations.

For the first time ever, U.S. government officials on Monday (Aug. 16) declared a water shortage for the Colorado River.

Mandatory water cuts will begin in California, Nevada, and Arizona as well as in Mexico starting Jan. 1, 2022.

Arizona alone will see the amount of water it draws from the Colorado River drop by around 18%, or about 632 million cubic meters (512,000 acre-feet).

For now, Arizona farmers will bear the brunt of the curbs, while water for Indigenous tribes, municipalities, and industry will be protected unless drought conditions worsen.

Both Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and Intel have announced plans to either set up shop or expand existing facilities in Arizona.

Chip manufacturing requires massive amounts of “ultra-pure” water in order to cool down equipment and wash silicon wafers, according to The Verge.

Factories used 6% of the state’s water in 2019, but with TSMC and Intel both planning new facilities, the fear is that number will grow.

Intel announced in March that it plans to spend US$20 billion to construct two new fabs at its existing Chandler, Arizona, campus.

Intel already has its own water treatment plant at its Ocotillo campus in Chandler, and in 2020, the company said it had cleaned up and returned 95% of the freshwater it used.

The Verge also cited Intel’s corporate responsibility report that said the company had used more than 19.68 million cubic meters (5.2 billion gallons) of Arizona water in 2020, with around 20% of it being reclaimed.

Meanwhile, TSMC announced in May 2020 that it would spend US$12 billion to build a 5nm fab in Phoenix.

The company told the outlet that for now, it does not expect water shortages to affect future operations in Arizona.

However, the reality is that water scarcity caused by climate change is expected to worsen in the coming years.

This means that larger water cuts along the river are likely in the future as warmer temperatures continue to reduce the amount of water from rain and melting snow that flows into the Colorado.

Sounds like an exercise in stupidity to me, but hey, California, and especially Los Angeles, are getting far more water than they should be entitled to, and so they should get their water cut back so it can be diverted to Arizona to benefit Intel and TSMC which in turn benefits the GDP and Wall Street and their investors, because it is a capitalist country, afterall, so capitalism should come first, and the people, last, because the duty of a corporation is to make its investors rich, not to make sure common people who don't count have water to drink ...

Maybe they can use that in the chip fabs ...

Which would be good for Coca-Cola's bottom line and the GDP ...

On another note, stifling up here - 91 or so ...

Three quarters of an inch of rain in the gauge yesterday when some T-storms went rolling through ...

And here is a conundrum for you, jeffmoskin, that has been challenging my intellectual capacity now for many years without cease:

If there are only six hotdogs in a package of hot dogs, why do the people who make the hotdog buns put eight buns in a package, so that when you run out of hotdogs to fill them, you are stuck with two empty rolls with nothing to put in them?

You think it is come kind of a conspiracy or something between the hotdog makers and bun makers to force you to have to buy four packages of hot dogs and three packages of buns to make it even out so you had nothing left over, instead of just one of each?
