"Third COVID-19 death at South Troy nursing home - Two residents in their 90s, and one in their 70s, have died after contracting the virus"

Lauren Stanforth, Albany, New York Times Union

TROY — A third resident from the Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has died from COVID-19, according to Rensselaer County.

The county said a 76-year-old man died after contracting coronavirus while living at the Marvin Avenue nursing home.

A 91-year-old woman and 95-year-old man from Troy Center also died over the past weekend of COVID-19-related illnesses.

The death announced Monday brings the total coronavirus victim count in Rensselaer County to 37.

Rensselaer County alerted the public to a coronavirus outbreak at the South Troy nursing home at the end of July.

"We seem to be repeating recent history here, and my concern is very high for everyone cared for at this facility," Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin said July 30 when the outbreak was revealed.

The center has a page on its website where it discusses COVID-19.

The page says that between May 8 and August 10 the center has had 31 residents and staff test positive for coronavirus, and another four who are suspected to have it since July 31.

The nursing home said as of Monday it has had two residents die since Aug. 3 "who suffered a COVID-related death in-house."

It did not mention the third the county has announced.

A message left with the Troy Center Sunday was not returned.

"We have submitted, and will continue to submit, detailed information to the DOH in accordance with its reporting requirements and encourages all of its Resident’s family members to reach out to our social work staff to facilitate calls and/or virtual visits with their loves ones to provide their support during this critical time," the Troy Center said on its website.

The Troy Center is at least the third Rensselaer County nursing home to experience a COVID-19 outbreak and associated deaths.

The Diamond Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Schaghticoke had 58 cases involving residents as of late July.

Riverside Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Castleton-on-Hudson has had 34 cases among residents.

Sixteen deaths at Diamond Hill and two at Riverside were linked to the virus.
