"Kamala Harris Is Now Facing the Unthinkable"

Story by John Rossomando

31 APRIL 2023

Who Could Replace Kamala Harris on Dem Ticket in 2024? - The question of who could replace Vice President Kamala Harris on the Democratic ticket could potentially become louder as time moves closer to next year’s election.

What We Know

President Joe Biden’s age is something that will encourage this discussion.

Is Kamala Harris presidential material if she has to step into the presidency?

No president has replaced his elected vice president on the ticket since Franklin Delano Roosevelt replaced Vice President Henry Wallace with Harry Truman in 1944 because the former was viewed as too far to the Left.

Wallace mounted a pro-Soviet presidential campaign four years later in 1948.

Democrats have been extremely unhappy with Kamala Harris and her seeming inability to grow into her job.

This has fueled speculation.

Thus far, she has shown she has little comprehension of the nuances of foreign policy, a lackluster approach to dealing with the influx of millions across the Mexican border, and a constant tendency to put her foot in her mouth.

Harris chose to avoid taking on China’s Neo-Colonial expansionism across Africa head-on.

Instead, she chose to cater to the sensibilities of Democratic Party partisans back home by stressing LGBT+ issues.

Last September, she elicited a howling response from Australian political commentator, Rita Panahi, on Sky News Australia after she claimed the U.S. had an alliance with North Korea.

She’s even been lampooned as the real-life equivalent of HBO’s Veep Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, on The Daily Show by Dreyfus herself.

Who Would Replace Kamala Harris

The possibilities could include California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The vice president’s job in recent years has been acting as the point person or attack dog for the sitting president’s policies.

Newsom has a reputation for being brash and tad arrogant; however, that role could be perfect if he were to replace Harris as Biden’s vice president in a second term.

Newsom’s personal handling of homelessness and the pandemic have been lightning rods for controversy; however, he successfully fended off a recall effort in 2021.

Unlike Harris, Newsom has significant executive experience, both as governor of California and mayor of San Francisco.

At 55, Newsom is significantly younger than Biden who will be 86 in 2029 when he would leave office.

More to Consider

People don’t vote based on the number two on the ticket; consequently, things that might be a liability at the top of the ticket are less so on the bottom.

Another possibility could be Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

She’s popular in her home state of Minnesota and has been ranked as among the most likable senators.

She can help Biden in the Midwest and is someone who is not among the more radical members of the Democratic caucus and has shown a willingness to forge a consensus with Republicans.

However, she might end up clashing with Biden do to his increasing radicalism.

Another strong choice would be Sen. Elizabeth Warren who has significant pull from the Left-wing of the Democratic Party.

Her attack-dog style and rhetoric would be a good fit for Biden who has shown a passion for staple Left issues such as abortion rights, economic equity, and her Liberal stances on foreign policy.

Warren also has greater name recognition.

Biden has options should Democratic Party leaders prevail on him to dump Harris.

"Kamala Harris Has a History of Being a Disaster"

Story by Harrison Kass

31 MARCH 2023

Can Kamala Harris Escape Her Past?: Vice President Kamala Harris has been receiving some positive press coverage this week as she tours Africa to reassert American influence on the continent.

The trip appears to be going well.

Everywhere Harris goes, throngs of fans are lining the street, hoping for a glimpse of the US vice president.

And the trip seems to be accomplishing its goal, that being the reframing of Africa as an investment opportunity, and not just some charity case in need of economic or medical aid.

Harris’s trip comes at a time when the US is finally beginning to understand that Chinese and Russian influence on the African continent needs to be countered; Harris is the tip of the spear in that effort.

And according to observers on the trip with Kamala Harris, the vice president has been relaxed and effective – a departure from the uptight, over-scripted version of Harris that has occupied the vice presidency for two years.

Apparently, Kamala Harris aids are optimistic that the Africa trip will help the VP turn a corner and return to America a new woman, in time to help President Joe Biden win reelection.

So, is this a turning point for Harris?

Can she keep ride the momentum of a successful Africa trip into a successful back half of her first vice presidential term?

Sure, it’s possible.

But I’m skeptical.

Harris has had a difficult start to her vice presidency

The Africa trip has been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing vice-presidential tenure.

Actually, Harris’s term has gone so poorly that Democrats have begun to privately mull whether she needs to be replaced on Biden’s 2024 ticket.

It seems unlikely that Harris would be replaced on the ticket – that would cause a backlash (on charges of racism and misogyny) that might negate any benefits from a new VP pick – but that the prospect of a replacement is being raised speaks to how poorly Harris’s vice presidency has gone.

Harris’s problem so far isn’t so much that she’s been bad, but rather that she hasn’t really been anything; she’s not going out there and making a mess of things, she’s just not going out there at all.

Granted, Biden assigned Harris difficult tasks (i.e., migration and voting rights), but the vice presidency is held to a high standard and according to that standard, Harris hasn’t made much progress.

Harris also wasn’t involved in the Biden administration’s signature legislative victories (i.e., Inflation Reduction Act, CHIPS).

Instead, Harris has just kind of been along for the ride, giving the occasional speech stiffly and unconvincingly.

Can Kamala Harris turn things around?

I’m not optimistic.

Two years is a pretty healthy sample size and Harris has been lackluster throughout.

And the problems don’t start in January 2021, when Harris was sworn in.

You’ve got to remember that Harris ran for president in 2020 and that campaign went abysmally.

She was out of touch with the zeitgeist and struggled to raise funds; her campaign withered up and died in December of 2019 – remarkably early given the fanfare with which she entered the race.

But, then again, Kamala Harris is the vice president of the United States.

She’s got a hell of a platform to operate from (as the ongoing Africa trip demonstrates).

So, Harris is well positioned to turn things around – if she’s got the capacity.

"VP Kamala Harris Slammed For Bursting Into Laughter After Saying There's More 'Work' To Be Done To Gain More Female Leaders In The U.S."

Story by Jaclyn Roth

7 APRIL 2023

Vice President Kamala Harris let out a laugh while she discussed the strategy of gaining more female leaders in the U.S. and Africa.

On Wednesday, April 5, travel blogger Jessica Nabongo asked Harris, 58, about her experience in Africa and how she felt about meeting Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

"Why did you feel it was important to emphasize the empowerment of women and what was that like to meet one of so few of the female heads of state?" Nabongo asked.

"She's the only woman on the continent to lead a country," Harris said.

"And before her, [Liberian president] Ellen Johnson, who was the first and the last elected woman to lead a country on the continent."

"So, there is still work to be done there — and here, obviously."

After the remarks, Harris laughed as the audience clapped.

Of course, people couldn't help but weigh in on the awkward moment.

One person wrote, "Well."

"There are so many smart and proven female leaders in this country."

"Unfortunately she isn’t one of them."

"I’d say her stepping down in favor of a truly great female leader would be a great start?" while another added, "If she’s the best and brightest thing they can dredge up for VP, there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done."

A third person added, "Have yet to hear something remarkable about her work in office."

As OK! previously reported, Harris came under fire for hardly being able to explain what she does as Vice President.

"He really is a true partner and he understands that job."

"And remember, we came in during the height of the pandemic."

"And so much of the work was about OK, we’ve got to cover a lot of bases and let’s figure out between us how we can do it."

"But he’s an extraordinary leader and I wish people could see what I see because there’s only one person who sits behind that Resolute Desk," she told Stephen Colbert of President Joe Biden.

"And the decisions that person has to make are the decisions that nobody else in the country can make."

"And he’s an extraordinary leader."

"He really is."

"That's an excellent answer and, uh, the question was what's the job of the vice president," Colbert quipped back.

"And your answer is part of the job, I'm guessing."

"Joe Biden Might Want to Dump Kamala Harris"

Story by Brandon Weichert

9 APRIL 2023

Can Kamala Harris Mount a Comeback?: Vice-President Kamala Harris is the letdown of the decade, in terms of Democratic Party notables.

Billed as the heir apparent to the throne, since running for president in 2020, Harris has been a gaffe-prone, incoherent, shambolic public official who inspires more incredulity from voters than anything else.

Despite her disastrous tenure as vice-president, Harris remains a key member of the Biden Administration.

Although President Joe Biden has yet to officially announce that he’s running for reelection in 2024, should he announce, it looks as though he’d be keeping Harris on as his number two.

But perhaps one reason the forty-sixth president has resisted calls to announce his reelection campaign comes down to the fact that he’s seeking alternatives to having Harris as his VP on the ticket.

As Biden seeks alternatives, Vice-President Harris has a limited window of opportunity to restore some degree of confidence in herself in the eyes of Biden and his handlers.

Can Harris correct her course, though?

Does she even understand how bad she looks to the rest of the country going into 2024?

And what happens to Biden’s support among women and African-Americans if he does, in fact, replace Harris going into 2024?

The Numbers

As of April 7, 2023, 48.8 percent of Americans polled disapprove of Kamala Harris as vice-president whereas 39.3 percent approve.

17 August 2021 was the last time that more Americans approved of Kamala Harris’ handling of her job than they disapproved of her in the role of vice-president.

More than two years have passed, and Harris’ numbers have only worsened.

Interestingly, a bevy of polls conducted at the end of March indicate that the Republicans have a four-point lead over the Democratic Party in a generic ballot for the 2024 Presidential Election.

And a poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies in early April pitting Kamala Harris against Donald Trump as possible presidential contenders gives Trump a seven-point victory over Harris (43 percent to Harris’ 36 percent).

Overall, YouGov says that a Biden vs. Trump rematch in 2024 would yield a Biden victory (39 percent to Trump’s 37 percent).

It should be noted that this two-point difference is well within the margin of error—meaning that if Biden and Trump battle each other under current conditions it’s anyone’s guess as to which of the elderly leaders would win.

In such a close race, then, the vice-presidential pick would count for much more than it ordinarily would.

Kamala Harris Fails in Policy

Foregoing talk about polls, which on their own mean nothing, we should be asking ourselves how effective has Harris been in her role?

After all, President Biden handed his number a portfolio of policies that she needed to spearhead to alleviate his workload.

According to most sources, she has done just the opposite for President Biden; complicating his life and adding more onto his plate.

This does not bode well for Harris’ prospects as Biden’s number two — or as a possible replacement for President Biden.

From immigration to the Russo-Ukraine War to space policy, Vice-President Harris has failed to achieve any major success for the Biden Administration.

Let’s just run through the litany of failures, shall we?

As the point person for the Biden Administration on America’s broken southwestern border, Harris has proven herself to be presiding over a human, moral, and national security catastrophe.

Of course, it doesn’t help the situation that the Democratic Party oscillates between completely denying that any crisis along the southwestern border and encouraging this condition so that they could fundamentally change the demographics of the United States (thereby making those demographics more favorable to the Democratic Party).

Harris was placed in charge of the crisis to keep it out of the papers.

Absolutely nothing she has done has ameliorated the situation there.

After failing at the border, Biden next had his number two focus on resolving the Russo-Ukraine War that began in earnest in February 2022.

One year later, it’s obvious that Harris’ much-ballyhooed skills as a politician have yet to be brought to bear.

Still, the Biden Administration constantly harps on about how resolved they’ve been on this issue.

Honestly, though, if this success on Harris’ part, I shudder to think how catastrophic failure would be.

When it comes to space policy, something that Harris should find easy enough since she herself is a space cadet, the vice-president can’t get herself together.

The vice-president traditionally heads the Space Council, which as the name suggests, brings together the various stakeholders in the US government charged with managing US space policy.

At a time when the United States is facing the prospect that either Russia and/or China could launch a devastating surprise attack against America’s vital-yet-vulnerable satellite constellations in orbit, Harris unilaterally disarmed the United States.

China and Russia have both developed an impressive arsenal of what’s known as counterspace capabilities.

These are weapons that can target, damage, or destroy American satellites.

Believing that satellites are the Achilles Heel to the US military and its wider society, American foes want to be able to render US forces globally deaf, dumb, and blind before ever having to fight those US forces on Earth.

Russia and China have begun testing these anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons in orbit at alarming rates.

Rather than use her position as the person in the Biden Administration tasked with overseeing U.S. space policy to deter Russia and China from threatening the United States in space, Harris ordered a unilateral termination of all American ASAT tests in space.

This was born out of her naïve belief that effectively disarming in the face of growing Chinese and Russian threats in space would somehow inspire Beijing and Moscow to abandon their aggressive course of action.

Of course, it will not.

This will be perceived as weakness and will only militate China and Russia further against the Americans in space — and ensure that we are not ready for when these foes potentially decide to strike us in space.

Harris is Not Ready to Lead

There are many more examples of Harris’ abject failures as a leader.

Yet, these are some of the glaring ones.

Given how close the next election is expected to be (at least based only on the generic ballot poll I cited above), if President Biden is indeed running for reelection, he will need to do something to pad those close numbers.

Having a number two who is perceived as being competent and tough on key issues would help him greatly.

For Kamala Harris, then, there is no amount of heavy lifting she could do to climb out of the hole she’s found herself in.

It is clear that she is out of her depth and should be replaced immediately by Biden’s handlers.

Yet, the delay for replacing her likely revolves around the fact that she is popular with women — a critical demographic that Biden must win again if he is to secure a second term — and with African-Americans (although, not nearly as popular among African-American men as she is with African-American women).

Those demographic factors are the only reasons for why Harris has been kept on the ticket.

There’s no way that the Biden team is keeping Harris on because they think she’s competent or possesses the requisite leadership capabilities to replace Biden, should something happen to the octogenarian president.

And those are very thin reasons for keeping her in place.

Should the Democrats opt to keep the vice-president on, unless she can change drastically overnight, she will be a drag on the ticket.

"President Biden says he will run again in 2024, NBC reports"

Reuters

April 10, 2023

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he plans to run for reelection in 2024 but was not prepared to announce it yet.

"I plan on running ... but we're not prepared to announce it yet," Biden said in an interview with NBC's "Today" show before the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Biden has said he intends to be the Democratic candidate in 2024 but has not made a formal announcement.

Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have said they will run together.

Top White House advisers are set to make final decisions on launching Biden’s re-election campaign, NBC News reported, citing several unidentified sources.

"The decision part is over, but he resents the pressure to have to announce what he’s already decided," one source familiar with the matter told NBC.

"Kamala Harris Just Made a Big Mistake"

Story by Peter Suciu

10 APRIL 2023

Kamala Harris Blasted for Not Meeting Nashville Survivors - The New York Post was among the news outlets that called out Vice President Kamala Harris after she made a surprise visit to Nashville, Tennessee, to meet with two of the Volunteer State's expelled state lawmakers.

And oddly enough, she failed to meet with any survivors or the families of the mass shooting victims that resulted in the political drama.

The lawmakers' expulsion came after three legislators joined a gun control rally outside the state Capitol that moved into the House chamber and disrupted the proceedings.

"The protest wasn't Jan. 6, 2021, at the US Capitol, but then again, no lawmakers joined the mob that day," the Big Apple paper noted, and added, "It was certainly an outrageous bid to intimidate legislators into doing the protesters' will — a gross violation of democratic norms that no lawmaker should join, let alone lead."

Of course, some Democrats see it differently as it was an attempt to push the gun control agenda following a mass shooting.

The two expelled lawmakers, along with a third who also joined the protest but beat expulsion by a single vote, were invited to the White House by President Joe Biden last week.

That had led to outrage, as the White House has been seen to essentially ignore the families of the victims, as well as the two hero police officers who stopped the massacre by being far worse when they charged into the building and took down shooter Audrey Hale.

The Gang of Three

VP Kamla Harris met with ousted state lawmakers Justin Jones, Justin Pearson, and Gloria Johnson at the chapel of Fisk University, a historically Black college in Nashville over the weekend.

The three have since been dubbed "The Tennessee Three."

"We are here because and their colleagues in the Democratic caucus chose to show courage in the face of extreme tragedy," Harris said, adding, "They chose to lead and show courage and say that a democracy allows for places where the people's voice will be heard and honored and respected."

Harris, the first woman and the first person of color to serve as vice president, also used the occasion to call for gun control.

"Assault weapons … are weapons of war," Harris continued.

"These are weapons that are designed to kill a lot of people quickly."

"They have no place on the streets of a civil society."

Biden also used the recent tragedy, in which six individuals including three children were killed by Hale – a former student of The Covenant School where the shooting took place – to push his gun control agenda.

Hale, a female at birth who had identified as male and used the pronouns he/him, was being treated for an unspecified emotional disorder.

Under Tennessee law, she shouldn't have been allowed to purchase the firearms used in last month's tragic shooting at the school.

No mention of that fact was noted by Biden or Kamala Harris.

"Joe Biden Can’t Replace Kamala Harris. Period."

Story by Peter Suciu

10 APRIL 2023

During the First World War, a common view inside the German government was that they were "shackled to a corpse" by being so closely allied with Austria-Hungary.

The situation was so bad that many in the corridors of power in Berlin considered how Germany could annex all of the Austrian Empire, and that would have likely occurred had they won the war.

Today, there are likely some in the corridors of power in Washington who may lament that President Joe Biden is also shackled to a political 'corpse' of sorts with Vice President Kamala Harris.

She is certainly 'dead weight' for the ticket if and when Biden announces his intention to seek re-election.

There is a fear that if Biden isn't able to finish out a second term (including if he should die in office) that Kamala Harris is absolutely the wrong person to become president.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris: They're Tethered Together

Though the media may not be as blunt in its metaphors as this reporter, even Reuters recently suggested they're at least "Tethered together."

At issue is that Biden can't replace Kamala Harris.

Of course, no sitting president has opted to select a new running mate since Gerald Ford ditched Vice President Nelson Rockefeller for Senator Bob Dole in 1976.

Ford, who had ascended to the Oval Office after President Richard Nixon resigned, was forced to select a candidate that would appeal to the more conservative base of the Republican Party.

Ford later admitted he regretted the decision to dump Rockefeller, but it was a moot point as he was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the general election.

In the case of Harris, she checks a number of boxes that makes it even harder for Biden to make a switch.

A recent editorial in the Boston Globe may have suggested that replacing Harris shouldn't be so unthinkable, but can it really be done?

"I think this is actually one of the fundamental strategic challenges for (Biden) ... how to navigate this," one Democrat with close ties to the White House, told Reuters.

"It's almost impossible for them to make a change."

Harris is both the first female, Black, and Asian-American U.S. vice president.

"You cannot replace your first Black woman vice president and think that Black people and women are going to just vote for you," the former White House official added.

"He needs her."

In other words, Biden could pick Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey, a black man, but that could appear "anti-woman," just as selecting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York or Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer could appear to be "anti-black."

Even ditching Harris and picking Oprah Winfrey or Michelle Obama could still suggest to some that Biden doesn't have confidence in a black woman and needs to try again with another.

Changing his VP would also put into question Biden's past judgment.

If he can be wrong about Harris, was he right in appointing Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court – especially when he made clear his appointee would be a woman of color?

Moreover, the Indian-American community may not be a crucial voting bloc.

Still, Biden could need every vote he can get if he faces a rematch with Donald Trump, who could opt to select former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley – daughter of Indian immigrants – and tout her as a bridge to the future.

It's also not just the votes on election day, but Indian donors could be turned off and opt not to support Biden with their checkbooks.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do For Other Reasons

Part of the problem, too, is that today the presidential candidate largely selects the running mate.

This wasn't always the case – but it explains why the last elected vice president to be dropped from the ticket was Henry A. Wallace in 1944.

As The Conversation reported, Wallace's bid for a second term as vice president was defeated at the 1944 Democratic convention after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt refused to endorse him.

Democrats opted for Harry H. Truman instead, and he went on to be president when FDR died just weeks into his fourth term.

How It Could be Done – Netflix Has the Answer

There is a way that Kamala Harris could be replaced – and the Netflix original series House of Cards offered the solution.

In season one of the series, the fictional Vice President Jim Matthews resigned and left the West Wing to run for his former position as governor of Pennsylvania.

In our real life, California Senator Dianne Feinstein could opt to step down before her term ends in 2025, and Governor Gavin Newsom could appoint Harris – who previously served as a senator in the Golden State – to fill the opening, while Harris announces she will seek reelection in 2024.

Harris could deliver a powerful speech (hopefully without the giggling) about how she feels she can best serve the state and the country from the Senate.

Then Biden would be free to choose a new running mate.

Of course, such a power play could only be pulled off by a puppet master such as Frank Underwood.

Biden and Harris would almost certainly manage to screw it up, and they probably know as much.

Thus, the country is stuck with Vice President Harris and likely could be for another five years.

"Kamala Harris Is Useless"

Story by Brandon Weichert

14 APRIL 2023

Kamala Harris Might Be President - President Joe Biden has yet to announce that he is running for reelection officially.

Though, most assume that he is running again.

If Biden were to run again and win reelection in 2024, by the time he was sworn in, he’d be 82 years old.

As of 2020, the average male life expectancy in the United States was 77 years old.

Biden would be five years past that.

Given the high stress of the presidency, and the fact that Biden already has health problems, his vice-presidential pick is likely to be far more important than it normally would be for most voters.

Uninspiring to the Core

Kamala Harris is an uninspiring figure.

She rose to power in the most dubious ways (by beginning her time in California politics having an affair with the politically connected Willie Brown).

Once in power, Harris spent her time maneuvering herself into national political office, eventually landing a senate seat representing California.

While in the United States Senate, Harris failed to distinguish herself — other than falsely accusing President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of rape.

Kamala Harris couldn’t even properly assassinate the character an innocent Republican jurist whose only crime was being exceptional at his job.

When she ran for president, Harris was billed as the female Barack Obama who would usher in a new rainbow coalition-driven future for America.

Her campaign for presidency in 2020 was so unimpressive that she bailed out of the Democratic Party’s Presidential Primary that year before her own state of California voted (fearing that she would lose even there).

Thanks to Civil Rights icon Sen. James Clyburn (D-SC), who many suspect told Joe Biden that he’d only support Biden’s fledgling presidential campaign if Biden chose a woman of color to be his number two (Kamala Harris), Harris was given her current position as vice-president.

As vice president, Kamala Harris has been given what some believe to be a poison pill portfolio which includes resolving the embarrassingly broken US border crisis, ending the Russo-Ukraine War, and preventing a space war with Russia and China.

All that for a woman who cannot seem to sync her lips with her voice or learn what times are appropriate and inappropriate to cackle in public.

Harris, By the Numbers

As for Vice-President Harris’ approval numbers?

They’re in the toilet.

Her approval rating as of the week of April 7 is 49.8 percent with a disapproval rating of 39.3 percent.

Sure, it’s not entirely awful (Vice-President Mike Pence’s approval rating hovered around 47 percent).

At the same time, however, the way that Harris was billed at the start of her ascent toward the White House, the expectations that she would be the next great president-in-waiting, who would bring another perspective to the White House was one of her key appeals for voters.

Yet, her record clearly shows the limits of these expectations.

In the role of number two, these failures and flaps are mildly humorous.

If she were to be made president because Biden cannot complete his term due to an age-related crisis, Harris’ negatives would be far more concerning.

It’s 3 A.M., Who Do You Want Answering the Phone?

Imagine that 3 a.m. emergency phone call coming through to a President Kamala Harris in which she would be required to clearly think on her feet, initiate decisive action, and stay plugged into the crisis until it abated.

Judging from her record in government thus far, Kamala Harris is almost completely useless.

That’s why it is incumbent upon the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to push Harris out as Biden’s number two (if he is, in fact, running).

She cannot run this country.

Harris can barely run her office.

Come to think of it, given his age and utter failure as president, Biden shouldn’t be running at all.

Everything is falling apart under his leadership.

We need a new generation of dynamic leaders from both parties to put their hats in the ring and offer a bold vision for the future.

It’s time for Biden to dump Harris…and then maybe himself while he’s at it.

"The Kamala Harris Problem Is Very Real"

Story by Stephen Silver

17 APRIL 2023

Plagued throughout her vice presidency with bad press, Kamala Harris has of late been going on the attack against Republican opponents.

Can she still make herself the likely successor to President Biden as the Democratic standard-bearer?

Kamala Harris: Can She Make a Comeback?

There are two famous maxims about vice presidents: That the second person on the ticket, whether during a campaign or their actual time in office, serves as an “attack dog” against the administration’s opponents.

The other has been attributed to FDR-era Vice President John Nance Garner, who is believed to have said that the vice presidency "is not worth a bucket of warm spit.”

(There is some doubt among historians whether Garner actually said that, however.)

Harris in the Veep Role

Throughout her time as vice president, Kamala Harris has haunted, you could say, by the latter maxim.

She has been contracted, somewhat, by the natural limits of the vice presidency, a job that does not prescribe any specific powers or duties, aside from succeeding the president should he die or be incapacitated.

Therefore, Harris has been assigned intractable tasks, such as dealing with the border.

However, of late, Harris has begun to embrace the other traditional role of an attack dog.

Speaking last Friday at the annual convention of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, Harris ripped Republicans and warned that America’s “founding principles are under attack.”

“We all love our country,” the vice president said at the event in New York.

“That’s why we fight so hard, we love our country."

"And we stand in the long tradition of those who have faithfully believed in the founding principles of our nation.”

She then launched into what has become a frequent Democratic message about Republicans in the Biden era.

“Extremists across our country attack the freedom to vote,” Harris said.

“They ban books to attempt to erase America's full history."

"They attack the ability of people to love openly with pride."

"They attack the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body instead of the government."

"They attack medication that for 20 years the FDA ruled as being safe."

"And just yesterday in Florida, extremists there signed a six-week ban before most women even know they're pregnant.”

Approval and Line of Succession

Harris maintains a low approval rating, even lower than that of President Biden, who has rarely cracked 50 percent during his presidency.

That introduces a dynamic that has happened less frequently with vice presidents in the past: If Biden, who at 80 is the oldest president in history, were to pass away or otherwise become incapacitated during his current term, Harris would of course assume the presidency.

That would also be the case should Biden be re-elected in 2024, and have something happen to him during his second term.

But if Biden decides for some reason not to run again, Harris would not necessarily emerge as the no-doubt frontrunner.

She would likely emerge as one of several Democrats vying to succeed Biden – which, should Biden either win or lose in 2024, will likely happen in 2028.

Biden told NBC News’ Al Roker in an interview last week that he plans to run again in 2024, but was not yet ready to make an official announcement.

Biden has not yet made such a decision as to who will manage the campaign or where the headquarters will be located, even as former President Donald Trump announced his candidacy six months ago and numerous people in both parties have been periodically announcing their candidacies.

“Closed-door meetings about when to roll out the president’s campaign are intensifying,” the New York Times reported Monday about Biden’s process.

“Still, with no serious primary challenge and Republicans infighting, he feels little pressure.”

Indeed, the only Democrats in the race so far are 2020 candidate Marianne Williamson and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and no governors, senators, or other elected Democrats have gotten into the race.

"Kamala Harris: Worst Vice President Ever?"

Story by Peter Suciu

17 APRIL 2023

Many articles have been penned in the last few years complaining about the performance of Kamala Harris.

Could she be in fact the worst VP ever?

What We Know

In January 2022, just a year into her first term as vice president, the BBC pondered where did it go wrong with Kamala Harris.

She was the first woman to serve "a heartbeat away from the presidency" and perhaps it was expected she could even be "heir apparent" to the presidency, the British news agency noted.

Things didn't work out exactly as planned – if that was, in fact, ever part of a larger goal for the Democratic leadership.

A case was once made that the vice presidency could simply be a place to put someone on the shelf.

Such was the case with Theodore Roosevelt, but in the modern era, the vice presidency can also be seen as s stepping stone to the Oval Office.

Such was the case for Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush, and of course Joe Biden.

Yet, it didn't really work out for Walter Mondale, Dan Quayle, or Al Gore.

And it probably won’t work out for Harris should she aspire to the presidency.

Kamala Harris: Worst VP?

In the 15 months since the BBC article was written, dozens of other pieces have been penned that questioned whether Harris is up to the job.

Last year in an op-ed for TheHill.com, it was even questioned if Kamala Harris could be ranked as one of the worst VPs in history.

Some have even said she is in contention to the be worst VP ever.

That explains why Harris kept a largely low profile over the past year.

A Kamala Comeback?

Now, it appears that the "Kamala Comeback" could truly be underway.

She spoke on Saturday in Los Angeles to abortion rights supporters and urged Americans to take action during "a critical point in our nation's history."

Harris made the surprise stop at one of the many rallies and she managed to speak to the audience without spouting her nearly trademark "word salad" of rambling statements.

Instead, her message to the liberal base was actually quite strong.

"And so this is a moment that history will show required each of us – based on our collective love of our country – to stand up, and fight for, and protect our ideals."

"That's what this moment is," Harris said near the steps of the Los Angeles City Hall, the Associated Press had reported.

"When you attack the rights of women in America, you are attacking America."

A Stronger Speaker?

Though VP Harris will never be described as an orator of the ages, she clearly was more polished.

More importantly, it wasn't a one-off fluke either.

Yes, Harris had a very good day when she gave a good speech, but clearly, she's been working on her delivery.

That much was clear as she also tore into the National Rifle Association's (NRA's) annual convention during her keynote address at the progressive National Action Network's annual convention.

"We speak here while the NRA is holding its convention in Indiana," Harris stated.

"Now, you know what they've called it?"

"They have called it a, quote, 'freedom-filled weekend.'"

"So, we must ask: 'Freedom-filled' for who, exactly?"

"Because it's not for parents who pray that their children will come home from school safe from a classroom in Uvalde or Nashville."

"Not for those who pray that their loved ones will come home safe from a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, from a grocery store in Buffalo, or from everyday gun violence in communities across our nation."

She then added, "Let us all declare: Enough is enough."

Kamala Harris Resurgent or Staged Events Only?

Perhaps Harris has found the causes important enough to her that she is focused – at least enough to stay on message.

The question will be whether she can be so quick on her feet and more importantly avoid the giggling and word salad when pressed on the issues.

A speech to a friendly audience shouldn't be hard for any politician, and certainly not for one who was trained prosecutor – as Harris was – but it could still be hard for her to avoid her old fallbacks when finding herself in the hot seat.

Supporters of VP Harris shouldn't get too excited of course, but her detractors – including supporters of the Second Amendment – may have a valid reason to be concerned.

She has shown she may be more effective than some may have expected.
